Carrickmore v Donaghmoyne
The third quarter final in the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament takes place in Gadrum Park, Dromore on Saturday at 12:00 between recently crowned Tyrone champions Carrickmore and Monaghan kingpins Donaghmoyne. It is a game that promises to be a high scoring encounter with both sides laced with attacking talent, one man sure to be to the fore in the scoring stakes is Carrickmore’s full forward Daniel Fullerton, Fullerton fresh from scoring 3-02 in last weeks Tyrone final, was the fulcrum of the Carrickmore attack in their march to the semi final in last years Paul McGirr competition where they lost out after extra time to eventual winners Kilcoo. The Carrickmore defence is backboned by man marking specialist Seamus Sweeney and the robust Brian Conway, Tiarnan McGarrity and Conor Cuddy provide an athletic midfield combination that will be hoping to provide a steady stream of ball to Fullerton and his forward colleagues. Carrickmore manager Michael Gallagher said the Donaghmoyne challenge was one they were really looking forward to ‘We're delighted to have the opportunity to test ourselves against the finest teams in Ulster. The Paul McGirr Tournament is what every U16 team should be aiming towards and we're privileged to be representing our club, our community and our county next Saturday. We're fully aware that if we are to progress in this competition that we'll need to play out of our skins as we're coming up against the cream of the crop in our province. We know that Donaghmoyne are going to be very difficult opponents as they're a very well respected and successful club in Monaghan. They're youth development structures are second to none in their county and this is evident with how successful they've been at U15 level and how competitive they were at U17 this season, narrowly losing out in their final after extra-time. They are going to be hungry and we're going to have to be at the very top of our game to overcome what is going to be a tricky hurdle. We've seen glimpses of brilliance from our panel this year but it's going to take 60+ minutes of hard-work and energy to win this game. This is the tournament we have been gearing up for all season and we're really looking forward to what should be a terrific tussle at Gardrum Park between these two young and vibrant sides.’
Donaghmoyne are fresh off one of their most successful ever underage season’s having completed the Monaghan U15 league and championship double and will be entering the competition in confident mood having easily disposed of a fancied Monaghan Harps side in their county final. Captain Gavin McSkeane is a huge driving force in midfield for Colin Finnegan’s charges and both Gerry and Kyle Finnegan will prove a handful for the Carrickmore defence. According to Finnegan the teams are no strangers to each other ‘Monaghan v Tyrone games are always tough battles and I think Saturday’s clash between ourselves and Carrickmore will be no different. As chance would have it we met earlier this year in the Ulster Og Sport competition with Carrickmore coming out on top in a close game so we will be hoping for a bit of revenge. The lads are all looking forward to the match and the chance to represent Monaghan in Ulster. Its only when you attend the launch of the competition and listen to the McGirr family and previous winners that you realise that this is more than just a tournament.’ Carrickmore by virtue of their experience from last years competition will be entering the game as slight favourites but as Finnegan relates to, this is a derby game and an intense encounter is in store. All proceeds from the competition go to the Spirit of Paul McGirr Foundation who carry out some incredible work for the less fortunate in Lusaka, Zambia.
