Loch Gowna 5-15 v Newtownbutler 1-06

Cavan champions Loch Gowna really made their mark on the 2018 Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament becoming the first team into the hat for the semi final draw with a comprehensive 5-15 to 1-06 victory over Newtownbutler First Fermanagh’s, but in truth the scoreline does not tell the story of the game as the Fermanagh champions dominated the first twenty minutes and were ahead until the sending off of corner back Donal McDaid, Gowna’s slick passing and off the shoulder running making the extra man advantage count to telling effect. It was all so different early in the game, Newtownbutler getting off to a blistering start with corner forward Conor Courtney as he had done in their preliminary round victory finding the net with a piece of individual brilliance. Two pointed frees from Daire Madden settled Gowna nerves but they had goalkeeper Oisin McCannon to thank after he denied Caolan Swift with a fine save, Swift pointing the rebound. Diarmaid King strode forward to get his name on the scoreboard for Newtownbutler but at this stage Gowna were starting to get a stranglehold on possession and they were rewarded when man of the match Diarmaid Boylan got their first goal, finding the roof of the net following a 50 yard run. The dismissal of McDaid shortly after combined with the loss to injury of Newtownbutler’s towering midfielder Sean Conlon was a body blow from which Finbarr O’Keefe’s men would never recover, Gowna making the extra man advantage count in sensational style. Points from Tiarnan Madden and Ryan Brady followed by an Evan Kane goal left the half time scores 2-05 to 1-04 in favour of Gowna.

King and Ger O’Keefe in particular fought valiantly for Newtownbutler throughout but Gowna had the impetus with them in the second half and their forward line certainly made their dominance count on the scoreboard. Full forward Conor Casey was to the fore with a second half tally of 1-04, his goal coming early in the half converting after some fine approach work. Casey’s tally was matched by centre half forward Cormac Brady who was causing all sorts of problems for the Newtownbutler defence. Midfielder Cillian O’Reilly got their fourth goal capitalising on a defensive mistake and Casey rounded off the scoring with the final goal. Newtownbutler’s woes were compounded late in the game when the outstanding Ger O’Keefe who scored 0-4 for his side suffered a nasty head injury following an accidental clash, leaving the ground by ambulance to a huge round of applause from both sets of supporters.

Gowna manager Lawrence Brady was understandably delighted to overcome the Newtownbutler challenge ‘We were worried coming down today as our preparations hadn’t been great with only one challenge game behind us, we got off to a really sloppy start with the boys showing some nerves but once they settled into the game our forwards really hit form with some great scores. The sending off had a major bearing on the game. It is great to have made the step up to Ulster level and this win will really bring the boys on.’ Gowna now progress to the semi finals, the draws for which will be made next Saturday, it was a very satisfactory days work for Brady’s boys but they will be well aware that they cannot afford a similar slow start the next day out.
